The Women's Democratic Club (now PAC) was founded on November 20, 1997. Our founding mothers, Jane Block, Jane Carney, Mary Curtin, June Foreman and Grace Slocum each brought her own expertise and experience: years of successful advocacy in protecting the environment, law, labor, civil rights, and services for the whole community, including the homeless. All had held leadership positions in campaigns; two were delegates to the National Democratic Convention.
They grew concerned that no regional Democratic organization existed to recruit and support women for elective and appointed office, or for effective advocacy on Democratic issues. They wanted to bequeath their expertise to future leaders.
June Foreman offered her house for long-range planning, and for six sessions, they outlined what they believed were the area’s most crucial needs, and the necessary steps for achieving tangible goals.
In founding the Riverside Women's Democratic Club, they sought to create:
* an active, diverse membership, with a dues structure that took into account ability to pay
* educational forums for learning the history, structure and discipline of the Democratic Party, its issues, and ways in which the local Club could interact with state and federal government.
* recruitment, development and support of women candidates, with opportunities for service on boards and commissions.
* workshops in the skills of politics: advocacy, get-out-the-vote, fundraising, networking, public speaking and effective use of media.
